Tall Story

The book ‘Tall Story’ is about an 8 feet tall boy named Bernardo. Bernardo does not live with his half sister and mum in London, instead he lives in the Philippines. Bernardo’s half-sister Andi wishes to see her brother and she wishes he would love basketball just like her. Finally, Bernardo comes to London and the big day for Andi. Andi would finally see her brother but when she does, she sees a tanned boy that’s eight feet tall. The cause of his strange height is unknown to his family but the secret stays with Bernardo. What will happen to Bernardo?

My favourite character in the story is Bernardo. He is my favourite character in this book because he is kind and shows his brotherly love to Andi. Bernardo likes basketball and he doesn’t care whether people think he is odd because of his height. He never let’s anything drag him down.

I recommend this book to children who like stories based on legends. I also recommend this to children who like books that express the characters emotions and feelings in different chapters.

Deer Oh Deer!

Deer are just those typical animals that wander and frolic through fields of green grass like they have all the time in the world. But sometimes deer can be monsters. Right?

When European settlers came to New Zealand, they found dense or thick bushes. What did they do? Well they cleared the hills for farming and the hills were soon covered with different animals. But deer wasn’t brought in until some wealthy men suggested having deer hunting as a sport. Numbers of deer died on the journey because they were fed carrots, old hay and stale water.

Deer have been roaming around New Zealand for 140 years. For a long period of time deer have been protected until the year 1870. Numbers of deer grew and grew because there was no predators. Because of the great numbers of deer, they made lots of destruction to the plants and fields. The government was concerned so they hired deer cullers to shoot deer.

1870 was the year when hunters could buy a license which allowed them to have a number of stags to hunt down. This lessened the numbers of deer. Some years later, hunters made money by selling skins of deer. Venison wasn’t a big hit then. But even though dead deer were hard to get out of the bushes, hunters tried and tried different methods but it didn’t make a difference.

Then the year 1964 came. That was when helicopters were brought in to lift dead deer out of the bushes. This wasn’t a safe method because there were many deadly accidents. But still hunters didn’t give up. Instead they threw nets down from the helicopters and trapped deer. When prices dropped, the business went down and they could not get any profit from helicopter hunting. So hunting from helicopters were reduced and the population of deer grew and grew.

Google Cardboard

What is Google Cardboard?

Google cardboard is a ‘virtual reality’ plan which was made by Google. This was made to replace those ‘fake’ photo reels that kids usually play with. Google has taken a whole new level and many people are amazed by this.

How does it work?

Google cardboard  isn’t constructed when you first buy it. You have to construct it yourself which brings out your knowledge of constructing and your creativity. When it is built, you place your smartphone inside the phone compartment. Then you look into the lenses and there will be a menu. Some of the categories in the menu are Youtube, Google search and others. By tilting your head up, down, left and right and it will respond just like you are in the photo. The magnet is what you use to click and submit just like a button but instead of clicking it, you have to drag it down.

What is it made out of?

Google cardboard is made out of cardboard. The only parts of Google cardboard that aren’t made out of cardboard are the lenses where you look through.

What do your eyes sense when you see colour?

When our eyes see something, the sensors that are in our eyes sense light and because of the light that our eyes sense, we are able to know and see what colour the object is.

Why can’t we see colours in the dark?

In the dark, we can’t see colours because the darkness around us absorbs all the colours. The darkness also doesn’t reflect any light.

How are black and white surfaces different in the way they reflect and absorb light?

Black and white surfaces are different because white surfaces reflect all the colours that are in the white light that surrounds the white surfaces but the white surfaces don’t absorb any light, it just reflects the light surrounding it. Black surfaces don’t reflect any light but it absorbs all the colours that are around it.

What determines whether an object is opaque, transparent or translucent?

Objects are either opaque, transparent or translucent. Opaque objects are the ones that absorb and reflect light. This doesn’t happen all the time. Sometimes when light hits something, not all the light is reflected and absorbed. Transparent objects are the ones that you can see through. Just like a ghost! This is because the light that is reflected off a transparent object, it passes through very smoothly. Sometimes objects are translucent. Translucent objects let light pass through but it scatters. Unlike, transparent objects, translucent objects don’t pass through smoothly. So when you look through a translucent object, it is blurred.
