Yr 5& 6 experiment observation

Aim: To find out the effect of heat on solubility of substances

Prediction:
  • I predict that sugar will dissolve in hot water
  • I predict that coffee will not dissolve in cold water and won’t dissolve in hot water either
  • I predict that cornstarch won’t dissolve in hot water and cold water
  • I predict that milo will dissolve in hot water
  • I predict that rice will not dissolve in hot and cold water

Substances:
Hot Water:
Cold Water:
Milo
It dissolved quickly
It stayed at the top
Sugar
It sank down
It sank down
Coffee
It spread quickly and dissolved
It sank down
Cornstarch
It dissolved
It floated and slowly spread
Bread Flour
It floated
It floated

Results:
Milo: When it was in the hot water it dissolved quickly but when it was in the cold water it and stayed at the top.

Sugar: In the hot water it sank to the bottom and it didn’t dissolve. In cold water it did the same thing.

Coffee: When the coffee was in the hot water it dissolved and spread quickly. It was different when it was in the cold water. Instead of spreading and dissolving, it sank.

Cornstarch: In hot water the cornstarch dissolved and in cold water it slowly spread and it floated.

Bread Flour: In hot water the bread flour floated but didn’t spread. In cold water it did the same thing.

Conclusion: We conclude that some substances dissolve easily in hot water such as cornstarch, milo and coffee.
