Mexico

Picture taken from: www.graafix.blogspot.com

A country that lies in North America not too far away from the United States. The country where the Rio Grande flows, where beautiful landscapes, dry plains and many snow-capped mountains are seen by many. All these wonderful things belong to one country called Mexico. Mexico is a crowded country with 21.2 million people living in Mexico.

Mexico is one of the biggest countries according to land area. This country has 31 states including the capital which is Mexico City. Mexico City is said to be a very polluted city. The official name of Mexico is the United Mexican States. Mexico is one of the countries that are visited many times by varieties of races. The currency of Mexico is Mexican peso. Some years ago people found stone tools in Mexico which proposes that there might have been people living in Mexico around 23000 years ago!

There is more than one native language in Mexico. Mayan and Spanish are one of the most spoken languages in Mexico. Most Mexicans speak Spanish because Spanish is one of the native languages in Mexico. Mexico is also one of the biggest Spanish-speaking countries in the whole wide world. But thousands of years ago Spanish was not known in Mexico. There were Indian tribes that had their own language and their own ways of doing things. Spanish only was known to the Mexicans when the Spaniards came to Mexico in the 1500s. The Spaniards destroyed many cities and buildings and many Mexicans died of a disease that the Spaniards brought with them. For a long time the Spaniards ruled Mexico until the day Mexico became independent in 1821. The majority of the Mexicans are Roman Catholics but the old Indian rituals and traditions are still remain.

The food that Mexicans eat are usually flavoured, hot and spicy. Many of the meals in Mexico have vegetables. Have you ever eaten a tortilla? Well Mexican dishes are usually served with tortillas. Tortillas are flat bread that is made with cornmeal. Usually tortilla is used as a wrap. Another popular food of Mexico is Tacos. Many people in different parts of the world enjoy having delicious tacos, whether homemade or store-bought.

Some animals that live in Mexico are armadillos, snakes and rabbits. Anteaters, parrots, toucans, spider monkeys and ocelots live in the forests of Mexico.  Many of us know the smallest dog breed right? The Chihuahua. The Chihuahua was named after one of Mexico’s cities. The national symbol of Mexico is the golden Eagle. The golden eagle is on the Coat Of Arms. The Coat Of Arms is very special to the Mexican civilization and it is another national sign of Mexico.

Many tourists go to see the old pyramids and temples which were built a very long time ago in an ancient city called Teotihuacán. A popular place where many tourists go to is Cancun. Cancun is in Yucatan Peninsula. Tourists go there to see the beautiful beaches, city and to learn more about the Mexican history.

Philippines

Pictures taken from: www.flagsofallcountries.com
Have you ever seen the Chocolate Hills, a church made of steel or have you ever been to the sandy beaches that stretch to one end to the other. All these places belong to one country in Asia. This country is the Philippines.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia. The capital of the Philippines is Manila and the money or currency that the Philippines use is Pesos. Filipinos speak in English, Filipino and other local languages. Most of the people that live there are Roman Catholics. Their national symbol is a FIlipino eagle. Did you know that the Filipino flag stands for something? The blue side of the flag stands for peace and truth, the red side stands for patriotism, the 3 stars stands for the major islands of the Philippines, the sun stands for unity and freedom and each ray of the sun stands for the 8 islands that started the colony against the Spaniards. The philippines was once governed or belonged by the Spaniards until the year 1898. The Philippines was then given to the United States. But in 1946, the Philippines was free. During the time the Philippines was free, they built a democratic government and a woman named Corazon Aquino became president. The Philippines is a country that is an archipelago of 7,000 islands. Did you know only one third of the Filipinos live in the islands?

There are many attractions in the Philippines from beaches, churches and landscapes. One of the popular attractions in the Philippines are the Chocolate Hills. The chocolate hills are in the middle of  Bohol which is one of the provinces of the Philippines. Why are these mountains called Chocolate Hills? Well, they are called Chocolate hills because the top of the hills are brown, just like chocolate! There are about 1,776 mountains that spread over 50 kilometres of land but they are not sure if there is more mountains. It’s too much to count!

Another tourist attraction in the Philippines is a Roman Catholic church which was built totally with steel. The only things that aren’t steel are the stained glass windows. It even has 2 towers! This church is called San Sebastian Church and it was built 124 years ago (1891) in Manila. It is said that this church was built when the Philippines was still under the rule of the Spaniards. This church was especially made for Saint Sebastian. Mactan is an island that tourists usually stay for a holiday in the hotels. This island is a part of Cebu which is another province of the Philippines.

Peru

A beautiful country with many Amazon Rainforests, beautiful landscapes and coastal plains. This country shares their borders with Ecuador and Bolivia and it belongs to the continent South America. Peru is the country.

Picture taken from: www.flagsofallcountries.com

Peru’s official name is the Republic Of Peru. Lima is the capital of Peru. There is a saint from Lima and her name is St. Rose of Lima. Have you heard of her? Peru is the third biggest country in South America. The currency of Peru is Peruvian nuevo sol. The Incan people or civilization were the people that lived in Peru many centuries back. They lived in the Machu Picchu which is a lost city in Peru.  In Machu Picchu they lived a happy life until the 16th century when the Spaniards arrived and wiped out most of their things. The ruins are still there and you can visit it. There are many animals that live in the rainforests and these animals can not be found anywhere in the world except for Peru. Did you know there are Indian tribes living in those rainforests? These Indian tribes live in a small ‘city’ which is located in the jungle. Most people arrive to this place by boat through the Amazon rivers. In Peru, there is a very patient flower that grows in Peru. The flower is patient because it grows for 100 years before it blooms.

Peru is one of the countries that have  the richest sources of copper, silver and lead. Not many people in Peru are rich. Many of them live in tiny houses that have no electricity or water that flows. These people work very hard even if they don’t have much to eat. Peru has 496,224 square miles of their land. The population of Peru is 27,947,000 and most of them speak Spanish, Quechua and Aymara. These three languages are the native languages of Peru. Most of the people in Peru are Roman Catholics.

Peru has many symbols. Some of the symbols are their flag and the coat of arms. The flag of Peru was created in 1820. Many people say that the flag is red and white because of a man named General San Martin. While the liberation campaign was going on he watched some flamingos with red wings and white breasts after walking up from a siesta. Another symbol of Peru is the coat of arms. The coat of arms is a symbol of Peru because the coat of arms shows all the national things of Peru such as the Vicuña, Cinchona tree, cornucopia filled with coins and the crown above the coat of arms. The coins are in the coat of arms to represent the wealth of Peru, the Vicuña represents the national animal of Peru, the crown represents victory and glory and the Cinchona tree represents the tree that are used to make quinine which is a drug.

Fruit-Flies

Fruit Flies- It’s a BIG Issue!

By: Liezl

Nowadays, fruit flies are a huge issue. They are spoiling our fruit that is being sold globally. If this continues, our whole economy will go down! They spoil fruit by laying eggs inside ripening fruits and feed on the flesh of the fruit that they infest so that it isn’t at a good quality to be exported.

To try stop fruit flies from infesting our fruit, we have to keep home grown fruit at home and not to move fresh fruits out of our property. Sometimes fruits and vegetables need to be brought out of home. This is when we have to make sure that the fruits and vegetables that we are bringing are store bought not grown at our houses.

The food that fruit flies usually attack are tomato, capsicum, pumpkin, courgette, marrow, avocado, eggplant, olives, berries, nuts, compost and peelings. These are also the food that we have to be careful with.

If the population of Fruit Flies grow even bigger than present, the task of getting rid of them will not be easy.

When maggots are found in a ripe fruit, make sure the fruit is placed in a plastic container with several pieces of scrunched up paper. Put the lid on and put them in the fridge. The other place you can place it, is in a bin, provided by MPI which is The Ministry of Primary Industries.

The solution to this problem may be listening to MPI’s instructions especially about bringing fruit or vegetables out of the Fruit Fly zone.

Pollution Explanation

Pollution
Image result for Pollution

Imagine what the world would be like when it is fully polluted. With rubbish drifting here and there and the sea all covered with plastics and cans.

There are 2 kinds of pollution. Pollution in the water and pollution in the air. The earth’s water is being affected by pollution. The water is not clean and it is usually polluted by oil spills and rubbish that is thrown in the sea by humans. In the future, the water in the beach might not even be clean enough to swim in. If this continues we will lose our sea and ocean.

Marine animals are also affected by pollution. If plastics are thrown in the sea, the animals could eat and choke on it. Not only can they choke on litter but when they breathe with their gills, they are breathing polluted water and they could die.

The air is polluted by factories’ smoke. The smoke that comes out of the factories have chemicals that causes the air to be polluted with different kinds of chemicals. This triggers humans’ illnesses. Pollution in the air affects our health especially because diseases come up. For example, we can get cancer in our lungs and many people could get asthma. If the air is polluted, we could breathe in polluted air which also trigger diseases and illnesses.

The solution of pollution can be using bins more often to put our rubbish in. We can also be careful of what we put in our bins. If you find rubbish on the ground you can pick it up and put it in the bin to prevent pollution to start.

Pollination

Image result for beesPollinationImage result for bees
Humans usually think bees are dangerous because of their sting but bees have a part in our lives. Bees pollinate our plants so that plants can reproduce. Pollination is the process of which the pollen from the male part of the flower (stamen) transfers to the pistil (female part) and when it has transferred to the pistil, the plant is being fertilised. Bees are professionals at pollinating plants especially because they have been pollinating plants all of their lives.

When a bee lands on a flower, the hairs on the bee’s body lure the pollen through electrostatic power. Many people may think that bees live in the beehive but that isn’t true.  The honey that are produced by bees are stored in the beehive. Some bees dig nests in soil and some live in tree hollows. The bees need more nectar and pollen because the growing season is when many bees are being born. If there are no flowers in bloom yet, bees will have no food and they will die because they depend on nectar and pollen.

My Business Card

Digital Learning

The Importance of Digital Learning?

Digital learning is important because you can retrieve any information you find online. This is important because people won’t need to fight over books to get some information of the topic they’re working on.

You can get creative when you are publishing your work. For example, if you are working on a project you can easily find photos and add shapes to type your words. You can also change your font to make your work have a different style.

Your work can be done anywhere, any place and anytime with digital devices such as the chromebook. It doesn’t matter if the place doesn’t have wifi because you always work offline.

Digital learning helps you work at your pace. So you don’t need to rush you work to catch up to everybody else. Working at your pace helps your work look tidier and makes it look like it would be marked on a high standard especially because you put all your effort into it.

Learning digitally means working collaborativelly as a group. You can do that by sharing your work to each other through your e-mail and Google Docs.

The Good News

The Good News

Have you ever heard about the good news? It started when a man named Jesus, the king of the Jews was
crucified. Many people watched Jesus suffer so many things. Mary, the mother of James and Mary Magdalene were weeping for their teacher.

Early the next day, Mary and Mary Magdalene decided to go to the tomb of Jesus to put spices on Jesus' body. When they arrived, they saw the huge rock that covered the entrance had been rolled aside. They also saw an angel dressed in glistening clothes. Both ladies were frightened. The angel said to them "Don't be afraid! You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene. He has risen! Go now! Tell his disciples!" Mary and Mary Magdalene ran off and told Jesus' disciples the good news. Peter and John ran to the tomb when they heard about Jesus' resurrection. When they reached the tomb, Peter went inside the tomb and found the linen cloth that was wrapped around Jesus' body. Mary Magdalene fell on her knees and wept, thinking that someone had stolen Jesus' body. Nearby she saw a man. Thinking he was a gardener she asked him if he had taken Jesus' body. The man came closer and said "Mary". Mary Magdalene recognized his voice and replied "Master!" Joy took over her sadness and she ran and tole all the disciples what she heard and saw. Everyone rejoiced and was very glad.

RAP-punzel Review

RAP-Punzel

On Wednesday the 12th of November, Christ the King school watched a play named RAP-punzel. The play was performed in the school hall by Auckland Playhouse at 11:30am.

An interesting and funny part of the Rap-punzel play was the ‘Land far, far, away’s got talent with X-Factor Idol’. The judge of the show was Simon Cow. The audience laughed so hard at the idea of the actors changing the name of the mean judge, Simon Cowell. The second actor to introduce herself was a girl named Jane. She was Rapunzel, which was the main character of the whole play. A man named Ben was the last person to introduce himself. His main character was Prince Rupert.

Prince Rupert was the one that usually had the entertaining parts. When he threw down his horse on the ground and said “There horsie! Make yourself comfortable!” Students laughed because he just chucked his horse down which made a loud bang that echoed loudly in the hall.  Another fun part of the show with Prince Rupert was when Prince Rupert’s pants were drooping while he was rapping. His underwear was showing with a pattern of gold crowns. Once again there was loud laughter, especially made by the junior students at the front. When Rapunzel and Prince Rupert kissed, most of the little children were surprised and disgusted. The older students just thought it was funny.

If you like plays that include lots of funny entertainment, this is the play for you. I recommend this play to a variety of ages. People that are old or young would love this play especially because there is a lot of slapstick humour so that kids can get the joke by the actions of the actor. There is also some sophisticated humour for older kids and some good wordplay. The actors were very convincing, funny and they acted the play really well.

How the Morepork came to be

How the Morepork Came to Be

A long time ago, in a country called New Zealand all the owls had the same calls, same feather colours. One of the owls was called Pinto. He was silly and he didn’t listen to the rules of the forest.

One day, Pinto decided to have a little  adventure outside of the forest. He flew to a nearby village and in the village there was a butcher shop. “I need more pork! This is too light! More pork! More pork! Please!” A lady said to the man serving her. Pinto flew down to hear more of what the lady was saying to the man but the lady already stopped her impatience. Pinto laughed so hard that he fell because he lost his balance. “Morepork! Morepork! hahahaha that is so funny! hahaha!” After he laughed and mimicked the lady, he flew back to the other owls and told them all about his afternoon in the village. The head owl named Owfi (which means high/wise leader in owl language) was the first to speak in the silence of the owls. Shaking his head he said in a soft but fierce tone.“Pinto, what have you done. You are not allowed to do that! ...I am very disappointed. You shall never mimic someone. It’s against the forest rules. Because of your silly behaviour you shall have a punishment.” Then he turned away from Pinto and thought what Pinto’s punishment should be. “Twit too! I know what your punishment should be!” Owfi then turned to Pinto. “You shall always say more pork for all your life and you are band to come back to my forest. Your beautiful feathers will be changed into brown patterned feathers.” Pinto didn’t like this. Sobbing, he insisted to let him have one more chance. “Wait! You can’t do this to me! I’m sorry! Oh please!, Oh please!” He sobbed harder. “Give me one more chance!” But he was too late and he found himself saying More pork whenever he tried to say sorry or ask for forgiveness. That is how the Morepork came to be. So whenever you hear an owl say more pork, you will know it is Pinto trying to say sorry.

The End!

Moment in Time-Visit to the Mary Mackillop Centre

Plan:
Sitting Room w/the Josephite sisters (Inside Mary Mackillop Centre) -Sisters tell amazing stories -Some students ask questions -Room crowded because lots of students in 1 small room -6 sisters in the room (Sister Colleen,Sister Louise,Sister Maryanne etc.) -Pink couches -Pink curtains -Light shining brightly through the windows - Beautiful artworks framed on the white wall The Sitting Room With Many Amazing Stories

The Sitting Room

“You know I’m actually a Black Joe and I didn't teach in this area. The Black Joes and the Brown Joes had the same rules and traditions which was a surprise really!” says Sister Colleen. I am in the Mary Mackillop Centre, sitting on the clean, wooden floor. I am in the sitting room with 6 Josephite sisters and a crowd of C.T.K students. The Josephite sisters are telling us some of their amazing stories from when they were teaching children to when they were taking care of the older sisters. I look around the sitting room, I can see that most students are all squashed up because the room is very small for a group of students of 5 different year levels. Their faces are so full of wonder that it makes me enjoy my time hearing their stories. Behind one of the sisters who is wearing blue and a cheerful smile, there is a window that has pink curtains drawn to the sides. Maybe the sisters did that so that the sun’s gleaming light would pass through. Then I look at the white wall with a mind blowing artwork. It is very detailed and colourful and it shows that the artist put a lot of effort to paint the artwork; just like the sisters who put lots of effort into painting God’s love which extends to the ones that can’t afford education and who have no faith. Turning my head to Sister Colleen I can see she is wearing a pinkish, maroon-ish vest and under her vest she is wearing a black long-sleeved shirt. Her shoes are black and pointy like a witches’ nose. Her hair is a mixture of white and grey just like clouds up in the sky ready to burst. Looking at Sister Colleen makes me wonder about other women. Do they have the opportunity to follow their vocation of being a nun? Do other women have the dream of spreading the love of God or even serving Him? I also wonder about the sisters that do serve God with love and have lots of hope in Him. Their strong relationship with God makes me feel like God is so close to his people even if times are hard and we think He is miles away.

Red Poppies

The symbol of remembrance, hope and new life

The red poppy reminds us about the blood from the soldiers that fought in World War 1. Flanders is the field they fought and where the soldiers died. Soldiers threw bombs to kill their enemies. Underground there were seeds of the red poppies. As bombs crashed down to the ground it awakened the sleeping poppies.Seeds stirred and then the beautiful red poppies bloomed up in the same place where the soldiers fell and died. Poppies were seen by a man named Colonel John McCrae. He visited Flanders field and probably thinking that he would find destruction. In his surprise, he found hope and new life instead of death and destruction.

Cats

Cats

Cats are classified as mammals because they produce milk and they don’t lay eggs. They are all carnivores which means they eat meat. The feline family is the family that all cats are part of.

Cats have blunt faces not pointy like dogs! They are different sizes and they sometimes have striped or spotted fur. They have sharp, needle claws and powerful teeth.

Cats behave differently. Some are fierce, some are friendly and some are both! They hunt brilliantly. Their sharp,needle-like claws help them kill their prey. They also use their powerful teeth. Cats have retractable claws. Once they find their prey, they silently stalk it’s prey and then they pounce on it. Their claws aren't only for hunting but they also use their claws for defense. The cool  thing about cats is that they can stick their fur out to make them look big. Have you ever wondered why your cat scratches the furniture? They scratch the furniture because they are sharpening their claws. They also scratch their claws on things because they are marking their territory with scent. Cats can be very friendly especially when they are tamed.

Cats were first domesticated in Egypt. Egyptians domesticated the African wild cats. The Egyptians domesticated cats because rats and mice would sneak in and contaminate or spoil the food that they have stored. About 4000 years ago cats became pets. People also bred some cats that were the same and some that were different. If the female cats(queens) are different from the male cats(tom) and they breed, their kittens could be different colours.

Cats are very helpful because they catch mice for human beings.

Matariki

Matariki

There I am standing in the middle of the beach in the cold night air. A blazing fire is making it’s way up to the dark blanket of the clouds. My uncle is calling to us. “Hurry up! because the fire might go out before you even come!” My uncle says with a laugh. My family and I are here to celebrate matariki. While I sit in front of the wild, flickering fire I see sparks escaping from their burning prison. The tongues of flames dance from place to place. Wind carries the salty smell of the sea and it makes me tingle. The cold air presses against my face. The aqua sea is still and reflects the glow of the golden stars. As I stand up and fling my shoes off I feel the soft, cold sand press against my feet. “It’s time to look up at Matariki!” I here my uncle say. I look up at the night sky. At first I can’ t see see them but finally my eyes find 7 stars that shine like diamonds that have been superglued on the sky. I walk closer to the sea and gaze up at the sky. I wonder why stars are used to symbolise very special events like the star that the 3 wise men followed. Perhaps it makes us feel closer to God or maybe because it is something bigger than ourselves.

Christ the King's Trip to Ambury Farm

 Strange Visitors

“This is Mr Big! Don’t worry, he’s friendly.” A familiar voice said. “Something makes my belly grumble… Sniff! Sniff! Ah food, lovely food!” As soon as I saw a familiar tall lady holding a big, white bucket, I knew I was correct! So I climbed the fence and saw tiny, yellow looking creatures all lined up. They stared at me. I didn’t really care! I just wanted to get my treat! Once the tall lady gave them some of my snacks they didn’t move! It felt like  1,000 000 goat years until the yellow creatures finally start to walk closer and closer, slower and slower. I know they are holding EXTRA delicious snacks! Finally a yellow creature gives me some yummy snacks. I hope I will get more! After a few goat minutes, I see the tall lady walk away from my lovely part of the farm. “But why??” I thought. Then all the friendly creatures were trailing behind her around the corner and then disappeared. I make loud noises just to get them back and feed me again but they ignored! I wasn’t alone anyway! I’ve got my 2 small and wooly goat friends with me, Basil and Skippy.

Nunuku's Law

Nunuku’s Law of Peace

In Rekohu, there were many fights that caused injuries and death. Nunuku was one of the chiefs of Rekohu. He was fed up with all the violence so he decided to make a law to stop all the fighting. When Nunuku told the other chiefs, they all agreed to end all the fighting. People kept the law. If two people started a fight, they were not allowed to draw blood or else that would be breaking the law.

They valued peace for a very long time. To show they  valued peace, they wore white albatross’ feathers to show that peace was so important in their lives.

Later on invaders came to Rekohu. The tribes were Ngati Tama and Ngati Mutunga. When they came, the Morioris didn’t know what to do. They gathered together and decided that they would not fight. The invasion was fierce. Ngati Mutunga and Ngati Tama killed many of the Morioris but some were taken as slaves. Some Morioris were left on the island and were proud of what the other Morioris did because the Morioris who died stood up for peace.

The descendants are very proud and today they show memorials in the Marae  for those who died because of the 2 tribes. In the Marae there is a long, wooden pole that has names of the people that died in the invasion.

The Treaty of Waitangi:

The Treaty of Waitangi was an agreement between the British Crown and the Maoris. They also wanted their identity and their culture recognised. In 1870, a native court award was 58 516 hectares which is 97.3 % of the land of Rekohu but sadly, the Morioris only got 2.7 % of their land or 1640 hectares. 1988 was the year when they wanted their fishing rights and land back and they also wanted their identity and culture to be recognised. A good thing was that in 2004, the Morioris won back their fishing rights.

Beauty and the Beast

Have you ever gone to a theater to watch a live show? Christ the King has! We watched Sancta Maria College’s Beauty and the Beast Production at Manukau Vodafone Centre. We went on Friday the 9th of May. The Production started at 12 P.M. Sancta Maria students acted as the characters in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The main characters in the play were Belle, The Beast, Lumiere (candle), Babette (duster), Cogsworth (clock), Maurice, Mrs Potts, Chip, Wardrobe and Gaston.

In the story of Beauty and the beast, there was a selfish and mean prince who didn’t treat people nicely. One day there was a witch who came to his dark and gloomy palace and begged him for something. Every time she begged he refused and told her to go away. The witch became furious and put a curse on him.The witch gave him a rose and told him before the last rose petal falls, he has to find the love of his life and she has to return that love so that the curse would be broken. This curse made him become a mean beast. All his housemaids and helpers became talking teapots, candles, clocks, wardrobes, cups and other things. In a little town there is a beautiful girl named Belle. She is a caring and a nice person. She is the one that will break the curse that the witch had put on the beast. When Belle enters the gloomy palace to find her father, the beast falls in love with her but to break the curse, Belle has to return the love back to him.

I thought that the production was excellent but the only thing I didn’t like was the romance. I like how the actors acted their part very well and how they made it so real. The actors were very convincing and I really like the singing parts of the production. The scenes were beautiful! I really like the gloomy palace scene but they should have  tried to make Belle’s room more like a royal bedroom. They also should have made the scene more like a dinner place where Belle and the beast could eat dinner. Other than these things everything else was perfect! I rate the production 5 star!

I recommend this production to young and old who really like fairy-tales and who really like watching live theatre. I would also recommend this to people who love watching Disney’s version of fairy tales!
