Where does a Kowhai grow?

You can find Kowhai trees near rivers, streams and in open forests. It isn’t only found in New Zealand. Kowhai trees can also be found in Chile and Gough Island. It is usually 800 meters above sea.

What does a Kowhai tree look like?

A Kowhai tree is famous for it’s yellow flowers that hang from their out stretched branches. Kowhai trees are tall and big and are full of the yellow flowers. The nectar that are in the flowers are what Tui (Bird with a white breast) ,Kereru (Wood Pigeon) , Bellbird and Kaka love to  drink. Not only does the Kowhai tree have flowers but they have small green leaves that are oval shaped with a curved end at the top. After flowering, pods appear with 6 or more seeds inside them.

How tall can a Kowhai tree grow?

Kowhai trees can grow up to 25 metres but when it is still growing it can reach up to 10 metres.

How do Kowhai trees move?

Naturally, plants move toward the sun to get the sun’s ray of energy.

How do Kowhai trees sense?

Kowhai trees can sense danger. When they sense danger they close their yellow flowers.  

How long does it take for a Kowhai tree to grow?

A Kowhai tree will take about 3-5 years to be fully grown.

Are Kowhai trees poisonous?

Not all parts of Kowhai are poisonous. The seeds and the berries are poisonous to humans. Especially if it is eaten by humans.
