How the Morepork Came to Be
A long time ago, in a country called New Zealand all the owls had the same calls, same feather colours. One of the owls was called Pinto. He was silly and he didn’t listen to the rules of the forest.
One day, Pinto decided to have a little adventure outside of the forest. He flew to a nearby village and in the village there was a butcher shop. “I need more pork! This is too light! More pork! More pork! Please!” A lady said to the man serving her. Pinto flew down to hear more of what the lady was saying to the man but the lady already stopped her impatience. Pinto laughed so hard that he fell because he lost his balance. “Morepork! Morepork! hahahaha that is so funny! hahaha!” After he laughed and mimicked the lady, he flew back to the other owls and told them all about his afternoon in the village. The head owl named Owfi (which means high/wise leader in owl language) was the first to speak in the silence of the owls. Shaking his head he said in a soft but fierce tone.“Pinto, what have you done. You are not allowed to do that! ...I am very disappointed. You shall never mimic someone. It’s against the forest rules. Because of your silly behaviour you shall have a punishment.” Then he turned away from Pinto and thought what Pinto’s punishment should be. “Twit too! I know what your punishment should be!” Owfi then turned to Pinto. “You shall always say more pork for all your life and you are band to come back to my forest. Your beautiful feathers will be changed into brown patterned feathers.” Pinto didn’t like this. Sobbing, he insisted to let him have one more chance. “Wait! You can’t do this to me! I’m sorry! Oh please!, Oh please!” He sobbed harder. “Give me one more chance!” But he was too late and he found himself saying More pork whenever he tried to say sorry or ask for forgiveness. That is how the Morepork came to be. So whenever you hear an owl say more pork, you will know it is Pinto trying to say sorry.
The End!
