What is Matariki all about?

What is Matariki all about?

Matariki is a celebration. It is the Maori New Year. Matariki is when people gather together and tell myths to each other. Up in the sky there is a cluster of stars but only 7 stars can be seen with our naked eye. Not only is Matariki a celebration but is also the time of plenty meaning it is a time when there are lots of food for everyone. There are lots of crops that are ripe and ready to pick. Fish, birds and many other types of food are abundant at Matariki.

How people get power from rubbish

How people get power from rubbish

  1. When rubbish is dumped, compacted and buried, it rots. When it rots, it produces a variety of gases.
  2. Methane Gas is tested before a bore is drilled in the rubbish. If the gas passes the test, it can be gathered and used.
  3. The pure methane is pumped through a pipe and it is made into electricity.

Horse Facts

Horses

Horses are mammals. Horses are also ungulates meaning that they have hooves.

The eyes of horses are on the sides of its head. They do not have blunt faces but they have a pointy face. On their head and neck there is hair called a mane. Horses vary in size and colour. Their legs are skinny(Like sticks but just a little fatter!)

The behaviour of horses are very different from other animals. Horses communicate by making a low pitched noise called a 'nicker'. When a mare(female horse) is ready to breed, the head of the group chases her away. Horses have 4 gaits: Walking, trotting, galloping and cantering. There are beats to these gaits. Walking has 4 beats and the horse's feet go separately. Trotting has 2 beats, Cantering has 3 beats and galloping has 4 beats.

Wild horses are intelligent and always work as a team when they are looking for their prey. Horses can also be used for team work by people. For example they are also used for pulling loads, ploughs and to carry things for humans. Humans domesticate horses by breaking them in. Breaking them in means that when a human hops on the horse, he or she stays on while the horse is bucking him or her until the horse starts slowing down and begins to quieter and allow the person to stay on its back.

Horses are intelligent and helpful to people because they can pull and carry things for people and they can also give you rides.

What type of writing did the author use?

What type of writing did the author use?

The author used a diary format. The author also used a letter format. These formats are very unique. This show it is a diary format because the words are in a drawn paper with parts that had been ripped off and parts that have been bent.

Frozen Mummies:
This is presented as an explanation. The author shows it is an explanation by explaining how Frozen Mummies are preserved.

The True Fairy-Tale: Troy
This is presented as a recount and an explanation. The format that the author used is just like 'Frozen Mummies'. It is a recount because the author is retelling what happened in the past. It is also an explanation because the author explains what happened to Heinrich and Sophia Schliemann.

Why do we need to insulate our homes?

Why do we need to insulate our homes?

We need to insulate homes because we have to have a warm and comfortable environment in our homes. If we didn't have insulation our houses would be freezing cold. Our homes would be cold if we didn't have insulation because the gaps in the doors would allow cold air to come inside your home. Hot air also escapes from the house because of the roof and the windows.

How did Maoris use minerals/rocks? and How do we know early Maori used and valued New Zealand rock?

How did Maoris use minerals/rocks?

Maori used minerals or rocks a very long time ago to chop things. The mineral Maoris used was mudstone. Mudstone was mined and shaped into adzes which are sharp blades to chop things. Volcanic glass was used the same way Pounamu is greenstone and it couldn't be flaked. The only way to shae it was to saw and grind it. A tool or weapon that is made out of greenstone would take a long time to shape. Glassy rocks were made into knives and chisels. It was brittle so they weren't the kind of rock that would be shaped into an ax.

How do we know early Maori used and valued New Zealand rock?

Early Maori did value and use New Zealand rock. They used different rocks to make different equipment.
Scientists have found hidden flakes beneath the sand. The tiny flakes were made from Maori's stone-cutting workshops.

The Good News

The Good News

Have you ever heard about the good news? It started when a man named Jesus, the king of the Jews was
crucified. Many people watched Jesus suffer so many things. Mary, the mother of James and Mary Magdalene were weeping for their teacher.

Early the next day, Mary and Mary Magdalene decided to go to the tomb of Jesus to put spices on Jesus' body. When they arrived, they saw the huge rock that covered the entrance had been rolled aside. They also saw an angel dressed in glistening clothes. Both ladies were frightened. The angel said to them "Don't be afraid! You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene. He has risen! Go now! Tell his disciples!" Mary and Mary Magdalene ran off and told Jesus' disciples the good news. Peter and John ran to the tomb when they heard about Jesus' resurrection. When they reached the tomb, Peter went inside the tomb and found the linen cloth that was wrapped around Jesus' body. Mary Magdalene fell on her knees and wept, thinking that someone had stolen Jesus' body. Nearby she saw a man. Thinking he was a gardener she asked him if he had taken Jesus' body. The man came closer and said "Mary". Mary Magdalene recognized his voice and replied "Master!" Joy took over her sadness and she ran and tole all the disciples what she heard and saw. Everyone rejoiced and was very glad.

Imagine that you are in a room full of chocolate. Anyone could imagine that! But… If imagination wasn’t stored in our head then no-one could imagine it.

                                          1.
It’s sad to think that most kids don’t really play with paper planes and think that it is ‘Air New Zealand’ anymore.

                                  2.
Mostly they stay indoors watching T.V, playing video games or just being locked in their room listening to music.

                        3.
Imagination  is one thing every child should be using in their childhood because staying indoors with your eyes glued to the T.V screen is just a waste of time.
                            4.

Your imagination can get off it’s chain and run wild! Sometimes you could imagine that your siblings are invisible and that they are transparent!!

                                        5

Imagination is a big thing that is right in your head. Some children ruin their imagination by watching movies that aren’t suitable for their age. Not only that but those shows leave gross thoughts in your head.
                                       6
Building your imagination is quite easy. All you got to do is to read more and more books, especially books that are full of fantasy.

                                   7
Have you ever remembered your dream? I’m not a person that would, but some people dream about pirates, fairies, ogres and many more things.

                                       8

Those things are from your imagination. Alice in Wonderland is a great book to use your imagination.

                9

When Alice fell into the long rabbit hole, I felt like I fell into a ditch that was made from the construction site.

                             10
Famous inventors such as Albert Einstein used their imagination to create unique and mind-blowing inventions. Einstein has quotes of imagination and here’s one of them.

                                           11
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

                                      12

Imagination isn’t something you online and it doesn’t come in a package.  Imagination has been stored in your head ever since your birth.

                                       13
Imagination is great to use everyday and I think that children should start using their imagination more often.

All About Me

All About Me

My name is Liezl. I am 9 years old. I am in year 5. The things I like are drawing, reading, doing art, writing, sport, doing homework. The school I go to is Christ the King. My friends are Angelika, Alexa, Faith, Kaydence, Micahzl and Amy.

A boy and his teacher

“John, this is your test paper. Lets go through the things you didn’t get correct. There’s quite a few!” I hear a teacher say. The teacher flaps the paper in the air. A little boy sits down on a blue and squishy couch next to his teacher. As I watch him sink into the blue couch, the teacher begins to talk in his deep voice.

I look at John’s bored face as he looks into the teachers eyes. His chin rests on his palm just like any bored person would do. John is wearing a wrinkled green and white striped shirt. His hair has tight curls that don’t spike up. The unorganised paint equipment is like an untidy bedroom that hasn’t been cleaned for months! The cars and traffic overtake the sound of the conversation but it isn’t bothering me.

While the chat of the two go on, I wonder about how many poor children in the world that don’t go to schools to get great education. Do they really wish to get the best education they can get or do they just push it aside?

The Powhiri

The Powhiri

Thoughts race through my mind as I watch the Manuhiri stand still and quiet in front of our gate. “Will they follow the protocols of our Marae?” I wonder. The call of one of the Tangata Whenua is loud and clear. Butterflies glide through my stomach as I think about all the negative things that might happen.

The green grass is freshly cut. The silence of the people are frightening but their smiles are not scary at all. The cold breeze presses against my face and it brings me a slight shiver down my spine. I look up at the sky and see clouds covering most of the sun’s light. The clouds have a mixture of colours like a very light grey and blue. In the distance you can see some parts of a high mountain covered with grey fog. My eye then catches the top of our gate and it makes me wonder if they enjoy our carvings inside and outside of our Marae.

While I question myself about the carvings, I wonder about how much time and effort carpenters use to make a whole set of carvings. It really inspires me because the carvings show me that the carpenters never gave up. I also wonder if other children have been taught to never give up.

Boy on a mini dirt bike

VROOM! the noise makes my heart beat a lot faster. “Will he fall off? Will he break a bone?” All the negative things attack my mind as I watch the boy in the air. The boy looks like he is very confident. On the sideline, I see a man. It probably is the little boy’s coach.

I look at the boy’s coach and see that he is very calm and relaxed. He is wearing long, dirty white pants which look like farmer pants. His t-shirt is faded blue and is tucked in. It doesn’t flap like a flag instead it is motionless. I look at the dirt track and see the boy’s shadow. His shadow looks like it is having a race with the boy. The dust behind the boy is flying in the air like sand that has been tossed about by gusts of wind. In the distance I can see a small building way in the mountain top. The open area that interests me makes me look at the grass covering the whole place. The grass is brown because of the scorching sun’s rays.

As I gaze at the dry grass, I think about countries that are suffering droughts. I wonder about all different families that have difficult times to find food and water. Does anyone in the world try to do something that would help them?

what is peace?

                                         What is Peace?

Peace is when no-one argues with one another.

Peace is when people smile every second.

Peace is when fights fade away.

Peace is when everyone is supportive and helping.

Peace is possible.

Gracious God

Gracious God

I can see your power like the shining rays of the sun as it rises.

I can feel you are with me like a dolphin that travels on the crashing waves. Not alone but accompanied by the flowing waves of the sea.

I can hear your gentle orders leading me to the right path like a sailor on the sea that steers the boat to the right direction and destination.

Thank you Lord for all the creations you have made in this beautiful world!

Holver and The Giant

Holver and The Giant

Long ago there once lived a boy named Holver. Holver lived with his parents and he was the only child. He was a little smart, very lazy, sly and adventurous. His house was a little brick house near the river. Holver was a boy that would not want to do any job except for shooting wild boar.

One day Holver and his parents went on a trip to Mt. Cartonele (traveling there by foot). While they were a third of their journey they stopped to have a rest. As you know Holver was adventurous so while his parents were resting and trying catch their breath,he went on his own little journey in the woods. While he was enjoying his time he heard men roaring with laughter. He turned, being careful that he wouldn’t make a sound and he walked closer to where the sound was coming from. When he cleared his way to see who was making the noise,he realised that the huge noise was made from 2 giants. They were having a little chat on a huge tree stump. The giants were the ugliest creatures that Holver and seen in his whole life. They had fat noses that was bright red. Next to Holver there was a very spiky plant and when a thought rushed into Holver’s mind,a cheeky smile appeared on his face. He carefully picked the spiky plant and aimed it to one of the giants. Holver threw the plant and it landed on the right spot he wanted it to go,the eye of the tallest giant. “Yoycheeze!!!! what was that? I can’t see! No seriously I can’t blink”. The giant screamed in pain until his friend caught Holver giggling and rolling on the ground. “HEY YOU,YOU UGLY FOOL!!” Holver froze, not daring to stare. Sweat slid down his frightened face. “COME HERE YOU FISH HEAD!” the giant shouted. Holver walked closer to the giant. “Please don’t kill me! I’m too young to die. Spare my life!! ” He begged and wept. “WE AREN’T GOING TO KILL YOU FLAPPY EARS! WE’RE GOING TO THROW YOU UP TO THAT HUGE ROOK SO THAT YOU CAN KILL PRINCESS!” said the giant. He took Holver in his giant palms and chucked him up. “OKAY...NOW GO TO THE GRAND HALL AND ATTACK THE PRINCESS. SHE’S PROBABLY IN HER ROYAL ROOM!” shouted the giant. Holver ran in the rook and went room to room. In one room he found a sword like pin and beside that pin there was a little note saying ‘to who ever finds the princess and saves her with this pin. You can only take this pin if you press the button on the wall.  If you save the princess, you will be awarded with...’ Holver couldn’t understand the other words from the sentence because they were smudged which was a shame. He quickly pressed the button and took the pin and held it in his right hand. Finally he found the princess’ room and found that she was a true beauty. He had never set eyes on such sparkly eyes. BANG! BANG! “OPEN UP!” shouted the giants. “OR ELSE I’LL BREAK YOUR BONES!”
“Come through the doggy entrance!” said Holver. Holver opened the doggy entrance for the giants. The giants crawled and tried to squeeze through the hole. Holver stepped forward and stabbed both of the giants in their heart. Holver heard the King’s footsteps coming closer and he quickly took the pin out of the giant’s body and ran away. When the king saw the dead giants and questioned everyone in the rook palace. No-one admitted that they did it so the king ordered his soldiers to knock on everyone’s door and ask if they had killed the giants of Mt Cartonele. By then Holver and his parents had settled in a house near the rook palace and when the soldiers knocked on their front door and asked if Holver had killed the giants, Holver said yes and showed the soldier the pin. A few weeks later he visited the palace so that he could bring back the pin. He soon married the princess and they lived happily ever after.

Saint Louise

St. Louise de Marillac

Hi my name is Louise de Marillac. I was born on August 12 in Le Meux, Oise, France in the year 1591. I never knew my real mother, I only knew my father’s second wife.  When I was at a very young age, I had the desire of being a nun but when my uncle arranged me to marry a man by the name of Antoine Le Gras, I knew my wish wouldn’t come true.  Antoine and  I  only have one child . We named  our son Michel. Some years passed by when Antoine and Michel died.  I’m still in deep misery for I loved both of them dearly but now I have learnt how to cope. Ever since my husband and son’s death I wore widow’s clothing which were the colour black.
Around the time of my husband’s death, I met a man named Vincent de Paul. We became good friends and started an order named the Daughters of Charity. In our order we nursed the poor and helped the neglected children. Later on, I set up my own training centre in which I was the directress. The training centre is for candidates that have newly come into the order. I also wrote some vows for our order. I have traveled around  France, placing my sisters in different hospitals, orphanages and other places to help people in need of special care.
I can’t believe the amount of women that wanted to be in my order. Even though I was the one that started the order with Vincent, I learnt many things that I never knew about.

Now here in heaven, I watch my order do what Vincent and I had started and I also watch people celebrate the day of my death which is on March 15.

Mummies

Research: Mummies

Why are mummies organs taken out?

Egyptians took out organs of mummies because they said the mummies ‘weighed’. They didn’t really know much about brains so they used a hook to get it out because they thought it was a waste of space in the head. The brain was the only organ they took out through the nose. The heart was the only organ that was left in the body. They left the heart because they thought it was the centre of thought and intelligence. Once they took out all the organs they would put all of them inside a mini coffin and then place the mini coffin inside the mummy’s coffin.

Reference:

Why did Egyptians wrap mummies in linen?

They wrapped the mummies in linen because it was part of the process of mummification and because it helped preserve the body for decades. Egyptians believed that you couldn’t go to the afterlife without a body so that is why they preserved the body. Preserving the body wasn’t the only reason why they used linen cloth to wrap the body, they also used it to keep treasures to protect the body from evil spirits.

Reference:

Did the Egyptians use ointments in the process of mummification?

Yes they did. They did this because it was a religious tradition in the ancient times. They did this because it was the ending of embalming and the beginning of wrapping.

Reference:

Is it only Pharaohs that are mummified?

No. Mummification wasn’t only for Pharaohs, they were for a class of people like the royal class, the elite class and the middle class. The classes lower than those were not mummified.

Reference:

When did mummification stop?

Mummification stopped in around the 4th century A.D.

Filipino Rituals and Celebrations

Filipino Rituals and Celebrations:

Celebrations:

Sinulog: Filipinos are really dedicated to their Catholic religion. A religious festival is ‘Sinulog’. This festival is very colourful and it is also the feast of the Santo Nino. The feast of the Santo Nino is held in Cebu every January. The very next day after the festival, a crowd of people gather to see a parade filled with floats, puppeteers with their huge paper mache puppets and amazing and skilled dancers wearing bright and beautiful coloured costumes. Drum-beats are the music of the parade from a dance prayer ritual. The drummers take two steps forward and then one step backward. It is very synchronized with the rhythm of the drums.

Christmas: Christmas is the most celebrated celebration in the Philippines. Filipinos are proud that they are the only country that has the longest christmas celebration in the world. The week before Christmas, children go door to door greeting people and singing Christmas carols. The Christmas celebration begins when the month’s name ends with ‘ber’. September is the start of the Christmas season and that is when you hear heaps of carol singers singing and you can see beautiful and lighted lanterns of different shapes hanging on the streets in Metro Manila. Parols (star shaped lanterns) are seen hung outside people’s houses. The parol represents the star of Bethlehem which was seen by the 3 wise men. But Christmas officially starts in December 16 with presence at the nine early mornings masses. The early morning masses are called ‘Simbang Gabi’ which means night worship. Christmas Eve is when families have a midnight feast called Noche Buena and families also hand out gifts.

Rituals:

Rituals:

Filipinos nailed to a cross: This ritual happens every Good Friday. Filipinos do a reenactment of the suffering of our lord and saviour. The Filipinos are taken down at 3:00pm. Which was the time Jesus died. Although the Filipinos are nailed to a cross, they don’t die.

The ‘Mano’: The Mano is a gesture or action that Filipinos do. It is a blessing from people older than you. The youngster takes the hand of their elder and places their elder’s hand on their forehead. The youngster usually says “Mano po.” Then that is they take the hand of their elder and place it on the forehead.
